New Studio

Moved into my new studio this week, its very different up here very quiet. But fab light, gorgeous big windows... I immediately had to start making a mess in the stark white room, it was all so clean and tidy from the degree show last summer.

EDGE, Heathercombe

Today after a very slow and windy drive across the moor we arrived at the EDGE exhibition and sculpture trail in the woods of Heathercombe. Lots of different artists exhibiting in the woods, in the stream and in the trees. Lots of the artists had several pieces it was a lovely space a really great environment but a shame there wasn't a greater variety of artists.

Today I started the second part of the mural and the second Pony. The pony is jumping, so its

a much more complicated piece, beautiful welsh section pony its lovley to paint, and its a gorgeous sunny day!

Last weeks trip to London had me all fired up in the studio and its been a crazy busy week preparing for the fair today.

These are sculptures by Barry Flanagan, exhibited in the courtyard of the Royal Academy of Arts, on Piccadilly. We had a wander around the Tracey Emin exhibition in the Members room, and then a stroll down Cork street. Some fab little galleries down there and great work too. Love these Hares, reminded me of a big bronze piece in Cenral Park in New York of Alice in Wonderland.

A Day at Dartington

I spent today wandering around the grounds of Dartington Hall, really near to where i live but Id never been before the weather was superbly sunny. There were sculptures dotted all around the grounds of the Hall. They are hold an international music event so little groups of musicians were gathering under trees on the great lawns playing the violin. How Romantic!

Being there made me think of how old the place was, and with all these visitors milling about today that this was actually someones home one day, very nice too! We had a picnic under these great big trees which had strangely been painted black? Not sure if this was meant as an artwork or a practicality to preserve the trees? Quite amazing though. I was drawing all day and all fired up ready to work. Another part of Dartington is High Cross House built in 1932. It houses a collection of artworks, potters to painters. There was also an exhibition by the tapestry weaver Jilly Edwards, Her work was scattered throughout the house on window sills in fire places. My favourite was a piece displayed outside on a terrace, 9 long tapestries, falling down from their fixings on the blue wall.

More Splashing about in the Garden

All afternoon I've been clambering over canvases, up to my knees in paint (literally at some points), reworking and over painting the floral commissions. They are really starting to come together now nearly done..... , and then of course on with the rest .........

Plenty of colour in these, shame it is nearly the end of the summer (secretly looking forward to Autumn, wrapped up in a scarf, jumping in leaves!)

I feel like I'm spinning in the studio this morning, constantly rotating canvases on the easel, waiting for each to dry enough to paint more. Juggling commission work with preparing a sale at the end of the summer is keeping a constant breeze through the studio. Yesterdays big clear out unearthed some older and forgotten work, some a pleasant surprise and some that was perhaps better off forgotten! I have started reworking some older paintings, with varying success... but its the big 'Commission' cloud that is top of the list at the moment, watch this space...

Sculpture Workshop

The dreaded polystyrene workshop arrived and was much better than anticipated, we worked initially individually and then combined our work and began assembling larger pieces as a team. We were working from a 'bunch of flowers' sounds a bit twee, but we were not trying to make flowers but instead find ways of looking at the forms and how the interacted with each other, how they made contact and the energy where they touch.

I love living by the coast, walking to uni everyday with views across the estuary and then out to sea, but i do miss the moor... Just stumbled across some old paintings, perhaps a stay on the moor is in order???

When I'm lost in studio the best remedy seems to be to go for a walk. so coming back from the beach this is what happened. A walk along the cliffs drew interest to all the headlands and their shapes in the clear water, but under the cloak of the violent clouds.

These Paintings came after the Wall drawing, an almost immediate response to the days walk, fighting back against the bland charcoal and desperate for some colour description. The paintings are of the same place as the drawing but the process is miles apart, one part or mark obliterating the previous, each layer fighting for its place, nothing is fixed and nothing determined?

What happens when you run out of paper? You draw on the wall.

I had run out of almost all my art materials and so trying to find the most successful ways to make work on the tightest budget i took to the wall with my last stick of charcoal. Working from drawings and photographs of a walk to the beach i had taken that morning this was the outcome; a large seascape filling the wall of my studio.

As a temporary piece it then must be cleaned away.

I love how the black pen adds a detail to the watercolour a crisp edge, and a fineness that can't be achieved with the brush.

Recycled Book Sketchbook

My current sketchbook is well traveled allready, throughout England and all the way to America and back. Instead of making my own in my normal way this time i bought an old poetry book and painted out or covered the pages and began using it as a sketchbook. It works great its so much easier to use than a 'bought' sketchbook which can feel restricting, the fear of spoiling the book and creating work that isn't 'worthy' of the pages. And because it isn't new it doesn't have that precious attachment that can hold work back. It allows complete freedom to make whatever marks in it that flow naturaly. It's really empowering, i highly recomend it. Here are a few examples of whats been keeping me busy. And what makes an old book so much more special is its history its been here for so long and in so many other peoples hands, its traveled with them, and they have left their mark on it too. Someone else has left their poetry in this book.

The Museum of fine art (in Boston) also proved to be worth the visit. Boston was great, its such an interesting city, the weather was fantastic. There was lots of street entertainment the city was heaving with people and fellow tourists.

Van Gogh's Starry night, one of my favourite paintings, ever.
And a landscape by Klimt, this was a highlight as i had not seen any of his landscapes before.

Walking at Sunset, looking for inspiration, the light was great as the sun went down and the long shadows made by the ig oak trees looked fab, shame i didn't have a sketchbook. collected some long thorns on the way, not sure what to make with them yet. Totally inspired by andy Goldsworthy at the moment; i've only just discoveren his work and wow I'm blown away i love it; deffinatley some land art on the way, watch this space...
